Liposuction, also known as liposculpture or suction assisted lipectomy (SAL), is a technique to remove unwanted fat deposits.
The unsightly distribution of body fat is usually due to an inborn tendency to deposit fat in one particular area of the body, most commonly the hips and tummy. Other areas include the thighs, the inside of the knees, the loin (love handles), the upper arm and the neck. The essential principle is that liposuction can change the body contours, best of all around the hips, buttocks and thighs, therefore clothing sizes for top and bottom are brought more into line, address the "pear shape" and makes the wearing of trousers possible without baggy jumpers, long shirts or coats.
Liposuction is not a method of reducing weight, but is a solution to localised areas of fatty deposits which persist no matter how much dieting, massage or exercise is undertaken. The procedure is done under general anaesthetic and involves a one-night stay in hospital. A few very small incisions are necessary to insert a probe into the fat to remove it via a high vacuum suction device. Great care is taken to ensure there is only minimal bruising but you should be prepared for some to occur.
Fat cells are thought not to regenerate in adult life. Therefore their removal by liposuction should give a permanent change in contour.
