Dermabrasion - In this procedure, the surface of the skin (epidermis) around the mouth is
removed in order to even out the underneath layer (dermis) improving fine crease lines and
irregularities. It is better carried out with a general anaesthetic.
After the operation some
swelling may occur and the skin will initially be very raw. It will heal by about 7 days
although at this point it will appear very pink. How long the pinkness will persist varies in
the individual but it will be possible to use make-up approximately 2 weeks after surgery
when all the healing has taken place.
Fat Transfer - this is a procedure whereby a patient's fat is taken from one area of the body
and injected into another. Injection sites suitable are nasolabial lines (those running from the
nose to the corners of the mouth), marionette lines (from the corners of the mouth to chin)
and the glabellar lines (vertical lines between the eyebrows).
Both dermabrasion and fat transfer are often carried out in conjunction with other operations
such as a facelift but in many instances patients request either dermabrasion or fat transfer as
a procedure in its own right.
