Breast Surgery (Breast Enlargement and Reduction)

Breast size is genetically determined and once developed, the breasts may fluctuate in size in response to changes in weight, hormonal influences such as HRT, pregnancy and breast-feeding. For example; some volume may be lost after breast-feeding, and weight loss or the natural ageing process may leave the breasts with a drooping appearance.

The problems arising from ladies with smaller breasts and those with larger breasts are similar. Self-consciousness, unwanted comments or sexual innuendoes and the difficulty in buying clothing are a concern. Larger breasted ladies may also encounter physical problems such as backache, neck pain, grooves in the shoulders from bra straps, rashes under the breasts and they may also find it difficult to partake in active sports or exercise.

Solutions to your dissatisfaction are available by breast reduction for the more "well endowed" individual, breast augmentation to increase smaller chests and breast uplift for those who are happy with the volume of their breast tissue but would like to minimise the droop. Uneven breasts (asymmetric) although uncommon, is certainly not unheard of and the physical distress caused by this problem can be remedied by reducing the
size of one breast or enlarging the size of the other, whichever is more appropriate for the individual. Whatever your size or shape, the surgeon will advise you of the most suitable procedure at your consultation.

Men also have breast tissue and, as with the women, some men have more breast tissue than others often-causing considerable embarrassment. Neither exercise nor diet will assist in establishing a 'normal' chest and the only option available may be surgery. This procedure is known as Gynaecomastia.

Breast surgery can bring great, change not just to the body shape, but also to the individual's self-esteem.

Breast Enlargement

Breast Augmentation involves an overnight stay in hospital and general anaesthetic. The breasts are made larger by placing an implant under the breast tissue via an incision in the crease under the breast. There are many kinds of implants and this subject has received a lot of attention in the press with regards to safety and complications. Your surgeon and your surgeon alone is the only qualified person to discuss with you, not only the advantages and disadvantages of various types and shapes of implants, but also any of your concerns regarding undertaking this procedure.

This procedure is a tried and tested technique, which has been performed for the last thirty years on over three million women worldwide. Results are excellent and women undergoing this procedure are delighted with their new or restored figure, reporting both increased confidence and a new quality of life.

Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction (mammaplasty) is an operation to remove the excess tissue and skin from the breasts, which are reshaped, and the nipples are repositioned to form smaller uplifted breasts. The procedure is carried out with general anaesthetic and normally you should expect to stay in hospital for one or two days.

Scarring will occur and must be considered when undertaking this procedure. The suture line may be anchor shaped, extending around the nipple in its new position then vertically downwards to the under-breast crease. Alternatively, it may be possible to leave a single vertical scar but this depends on the amount of tissue to be removed. Although the scars will initially be pink they will eventually return to normal skin colour. It is your surgeon who will discuss with you the most appropriate technique for your particular condition.

The results following breast reduction are excellent and in many cases change dramatically the patients' life allowing them to be more active with increased self-esteem and confidence.

Breast Uplift

It is possible to reshape the breast into one which looks more youthful and feels firmer. The operation is called a Mastopexy and involves and general anaesthetic and an overnight stay in hospital.

Scarring will occur and must be considered with breast uplift, but again in time the scars will fade to a natural skin tone. It is your surgeon who will discuss with you the most appropriate technique for your particular condition.

Male Breast Reduction - Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia reduction involves a general anaesthetic and usually an overnight stay in hospital is necessary. Today, with the advancement of surgical techniques and the introduction of specifically designed liposuction equipment, the surgeon is able to break up and draw off excess breast tissue. Nothing heavy should be lifted for approximately two weeks nor should the patient take part in sport, particularly contact sport for approximately one month. In many cases working life is not affected greatly but it is your surgeon who will give direct advice on this issue.

Following treatment the breast tissue does not grow back and fat cannot be deposited as the fat cells have been removed. It is a permanent solution and does much in restoring confidence and quality of life for those choosing to undergo this effective yet relatively simple procedure.
